The Do’s and Don’ts of Tattoo Aftercare

Getting a new tattoo is exciting, but taking care of it properly is essential to ensure it heals well and looks great for years to come. The healing process typically takes about two weeks, but proper aftercare can make all the difference. Here’s everything you need to know about the do’s and don’ts after getting a tattoo.

The Do's of tattoo Aftercare:

The Don'ts of tattoo Aftercare:

✅ Moisturize:

Your tattoo doesn’t heal because of lotion—the body does. However, lotion prevents excessive dryness and makes healing more comfortable. You can start moisturizing after 3-4 days, but this is a personal preference. Apply a thin layer of unscented lotion like Cetaphil, Lubriderm, or even coconut oil 1-3 times a day. Your skin shouldn’t look shiny—less is more! Avoid petroleum-based products unless used correctly, as they can suffocate the skin.

❌ Don’t Submerge Your Tattoo in Water:

No swimming, baths, hot tubs, or saunas! Prolonged exposure to water can cause fading, poor healing, and a higher risk of infection. Keep showers short (under 10 minutes) and avoid soaking the area.

✅ Wash Your Tattoo Properly:

Your first wash should happen right after removing the bandage. Wash your tattoo 1-3 times a day using an unscented antibacterial soap such as Dial Gold, Dove, or Dr. Bronner’s. Use your hands to lather the soap, gently wash the area for about a minute, and rinse thoroughly. Let it air dry or gently pat it dry with a clean paper towel. Avoid using hand towels, as they can harbor bacteria.

❌ Don’t Submerge Your Tattoo in Water:

Once you remove your bandage, your tattoo doesn’t need to be rewrapped unless your artist specifically advises it. Rewrapping without proper cleaning increases infection risks.

✅ Let It Breathe:

If your artist provides a bandage like Saniderm, you can leave it on for up to 5 days. If using a short-term bandage, remove it after at least 4 hours or overnight. Always wash your tattoo after removing any bandage.

❌ Avoid Scented Lotions and Soaps:

Fragrances and harsh chemicals can irritate the skin and lead to poor healing. Stick to mild, unscented products.

✅ Keep It Covered from the Sun:

A sunburn on a fresh tattoo can cause serious damage. Avoid direct sunlight and do not apply sunscreen until your tattoo is fully healed. Once healed, always use sunscreen to prevent fading.

❌ Don’t Pick, Scratch, or Peel:

Your tattoo will itch, this is normal! However, picking at scabs or scratching can remove ink and cause patchy healing. If the itch becomes unbearable, gently slap the area or lightly rub around it.

✅ Wear Loose Clothing:

Tight clothing can cause friction and irritation, leading to premature scab removal and even potential ink distortion. Choose breathable, loose-fitting fabrics while your tattoo heals.

❌ Say No to Antibiotic Ointments (Unless Advised by a Doctor):

While it may seem like a good idea, antibiotic creams can slow down the healing process and lead to poor results. Only use them if prescribed by a professional for an infection.
